Overview

The A:Warehouse is a highly scalable product that follows the requirements step by step by adding modules and data marts on demand.

Highlights

  • The A:Warehouse is based on the concepts of Active Warehousing. Every five minutes (given by configuration) it processes and consolidates information from the operative systems into KPIs.
  • The A:Warehouse works with a Named Rules layer. Well known labels (“Revenue flights”, “Regional Services”, “Inter­continental Fleet”, “Active Fleet”, “OPS Time Period”, “Last Week”) refer to established rules. No matter whether you use a report with KPIs, or a query tool for detailed views, by utilizing centrally stored rules they will always provide the same result.
  • Offers a suite of information products: A:Monitor as a KPI centric, live tickering information portal, typically used by process members, which are involved in daily operations. A:Reporter as a management report with expert annotation workflow on size. A:Explorer for experts who need to analyze to the smallest detail.
  • Works hand in hand with A:MDM for comprehensive master data management.
  • Third party tools for Business Intelligence (Tableau, Micro­Strategy, IBM Cognos, SAP Business Objects, …) can easily be integrated.
  • The A:Warehouse performs sanity-checks regularly, nightly by configuration. It logs violations and reports them through a notification service and a journal.
  • A:Clearing allows authorized users to display the journal and correct the data (flights, rotations, MVTs, …) that caused the rule violations.
  • Web GUIs only: Internet Explorer 8+, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Apple Safari, ... Plug-Ins and Flash are not required – only HTML, CSS, JavaScript and SVG/VML.
  • Minimal technical requirements: Oracle RDBMS and Apache, Tomcat, Java Platform and Web browser.

A:Marts

A:Marts is the core module which unites all typical data warehouse processes (ETL, Master Matrix, Scheduling, etc.) and provides the services for the information products. Here, the data is crystalized into themes and information.

Some of the information is available as Live KPIs and Forecast KPIs, which are calculated every five minutes (or as setup) – worldwide, for every airport required, for domestic or international flights and other dimensions.

In connection with irregs and delays, the actions and reactions of the traffic control center are of interest: which dispositions were stated when, and for what event? What effect does this have on the following rotational events? Where and when were they caused, and for what reason? How good was the planning? How many reserves were provided/required?

Therefore there are, KPIs on: disposition, primary delays, secondary delays, rotational delay causes/recovery/effects, ground time sufficiency, ground time performance, and block time sufficiency via the dimensions: airlines, airports, aircraft type, fleet, traffic area, flight number, origin and destination, etc.

KPIs, which have been developed in collaboration with Lufthansa Consulting and in interaction with the so-called Fuel Think Tank in order to achieve a comprehensive information cluster: performance index, fuel consumption, extra fuel consumption, precision block fuel planning, etc. indexed by weight (payload, etc.) and distance, differentiated via the dimensions: airlines, aircraft type, aircraft registration, routes, etc.

It is possible, of course, to enhance the A:Marts by means of your own KPIs, or to adapt the KPIs of the A:Warehouse as provided. Information Design will implement the batch jobs, or rather micro batch jobs, for these KPIs, their dimensions and master data. These KPIs are fully integrated into the information products.

A:Reporter

This is a multi-dimensional management reporting tool which offers a commenting workflow, handling of targets and thresholds. Its focus is on an overview, the processes and analyses, rather than the KPI, as is the case with A:Monitor.

A:Monitor

This information product provides KPIs and dimensions in graphical, tabular and detailed view. It requires only a web browser. In the context of Business Intelligence 2.0 it serves as an information portal within a comprehensive rights concept.

Highlights

  • Together with the Live and Forecast KPIs, A:Monitor offers a detailed ticker for worldwide operations at 5-minute intervals (defined by setup).
  • While focusing on a chosen KPI in the center, a summary in the right column gives an overview of essential KPIs with traffic lighting.
  • The Values tab show the classic table view of the KPIs - with all current dimensions transferred from the Chart tab.
  • The Detail tab offers all detail data, typically the current departures with flight number, aircraft registration, scheduled and actual times, delays and other information relating to the chosen KPI - with a wide range of dimensions for querying the data.
  • Clicking on the chart bar/stack brings up the underlying details, typically the delayed, cancelled, departed, diverted, ... flights.
  • Web browser only: no Flash, Java or plug-ins needed (with special thanks to Highcharts).

A:Explorer

Exploring into the very details of the A:Warehouse - with complex queries that are generated easily by using meaningful named rules.

Highlights

  • Criteria are simply expressed by named rules like "Revenue flights", "Technical delays", "Yesterday", groups of airports, aircraft types, gates and more. Those can be combined with manual criteria including sets ("FRA, BUD, IST") or intervals ("9000-9999, 8000-8100").
  • Attributes can be chosen one by one or by information cluster ("Flight", "Airport", "Aircraft").
  • Queries can be extended by SQL WHERE clauses for even more complex queries.
  • Exports are optimized for usage by Microsoft Excel.
  • Detail views can be configured on the fly, by choosing the information cluster in the wished order - persisted per user by the A:Warehouse.
  • Favourites allow to save all criteria and attribute settings for personal use or also for colleges - since criteria can be formulated relatively like "Last Week" or "Yesterday", these favourites allow to publish standard queries.
  • Comments can be added for explanations and notes.

A:Collector

With this component, all data can be gathered for the warehouse, by means of a standardized interface via a queue, in accordance with predefined schemes regarding the information cluster.

Various queuing systems are supported: IBM MQ Series, Oracle Advanced Queues, JBoss JMS, etc. as well as an interface for the products of the Lufthansa Systems NetLine suite, specifically: IOCC ESB.

The A:Collector requires a complete, integrated and prompt data supply, alternatively the optional A:Hub, the Aviation Hubcan be applied to ensure the required data integrity (more information below).
